Who should replace Steve Carell on 'The Office'?

Michael Ausiello has been keeping track of potential replacements for when Steve Carell leaves The Office after this season.

His initial list:

  • Ricky Gervais
  • Kathy Bates
  • Amy Ryan
  • Rainn Wilson
  • Michael Emerson
  • Craig Robinson
  • David Cross

And now, there have been two more folks added to the list: Danny McBride of Eastbound & Down and Rhys Darby of Flight of the Conchords.

There are a few issues with some of the folks listed. Kathy Bates is doubtful because of her commitment to another show (thankfully, because her Jo just isn’t very funny to me). Amy Ryan as boss of Dunder-Mifflin would be poetic, but I don’t think she could carry the whole show. Danny McBride couldĀ carry the show, but likely won’t considering he’s already committed to another season of Eastbound & Down. And as much as I love Rainn Wilson as Dwight, I’m not sure I see it, even if Mindy Kaling does. It seems like that would be the lazy move.

I can, however, get on board with Michael Emerson from LOST, David Cross of Arrested Development and Mr. Show fame, and Rhys Darby. For Emerson, it would be a huge stretch, but he’s shown that he can be delightfully funny while still maintaining his creepy demeanor. David Cross’s Tobias was one of the funnier characters on TV in the last 10 years and I’d love to see him take a swing at it. The really intriguing one to me though is Darby, who was absolutely GENIUS as Murray on Flight of the Conchords. But in my opinion, that brings up another possible replacement in Jermaine Clement.

So I just made the list longer, I guess.

Who do you think should replace Steve Carell on ‘The Office’?
