Notes
This is actually a really good question that I’m not sure I can answer well…
Community management requires a lot of different skills. I did not go to school for any of them except maybe communication. I’ve been working exclusively on the web for a long time and have really worked to develop my knowledge of every aspect. I try new things and throw myself at the new stuff because that’s the only way to learn it.
The best thing to do is to be a part of other online communities and observe what is done well and what is not. Community Managers have to serve as advocates for the members while still keeping a close eye on the business strategy.
If you want to hear the specific way in which I became a Community Manager, here it is: I had a big time passion for both community building and for movies. I have good people skills. I also happened to have a bunch of other web experience that I think helped me along the way.
