Words that Zing

A List Apart is one of the best (if not the best) resources on the web for people who make websites™. The content they put out on a monthly basis is head-and-shoulders above what most other sites can even hope for. This month, in her article, Words that Zing, Colleen Lang explores the importance of professional web writing:

To select the right words, take cues from rhetoric and psychology. I do not mean use unctuous sales language or manipulative mind control, nor do I necessarily mean use catchy words. I simply mean add influential weight to web writing based on centuries of rhetorical wisdom and a growing body of scientific knowledge.

She goes on to explore examples of good word choices in the audience context and shows how those good choices can lead to outcomes that actually make our society better.

When I think about that potential, I’m convinced that we have more than an opportunity to say the right words at the right time. We have a responsibility to do so.
