Gowalla vs. Foursquare Goes to University
We’re pleased to announce that the University of Florida has joined the ranks of universities and organizations on Gowalla! To kick it off, they’ve just rolled out the official University of Florida campus tour on Gowalla, complete with some rad custom stamps at the various Spots along the way. Welcome, Gators!
and then a few hours later, I saw this in my dashboard…
A few months ago, we put a call out for college students who wanted to represent foursquare on campus and the response was astounding. So today, with everyone settled in on campus, we’re happy to announce official partnerships with over 20 universities, student ambassadors in several dozen others, and we’re adding more every day.
If you’re interested in joining our program and would like to see how some of our university partners are using foursquare on campus, please visit us at www.foursquare.com/universities
I don’t know why, but it’s really starting to bug me that Foursquare has significantly more users than Gowalla. I think that both services have their merits, but I feel like Gowalla has a better path to innovation than Foursquare right now. Additionally, one of the things I like about Gowalla is that they seem committed to finding ways to do good AND make money through solid partnerships (really loved the recent one with Toms Shoes and AT&T).
As far as the idea goes, I think this is an intriguing concept…allowing geo-location apps to assist with your campus tour. But does anyone else think it’s weird that both services rolled out announcements about University-related outreach on the same day? (Technically, Gowalla U was announced 3 days ago.)
